Dana (distortion) Yavin

Dana (distortion) Yavin was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, and moved to New York City in 2000. She has a film degree from the School of Visual Arts in New York (2004) and also attended the Camera Obscura School of Art in Tel Aviv (2000). Her relentless passion for photographing live music has led to multiple physical injuries, violent ejection from music venues, and setting the trend for using step stools in the photography pit (she is five feet tall).

Dana’s work as a music photographer has been featured in a variety of media, including Rolling Stone, BrooklynVegan, NME, SPIN, Gibson, Fender, the Waster, Yahoo.com, CBS local, Masterybridge.com, Rockin’on Magazine (Japan), BASSQuarterly (Germany), DRUM! Magazine, Microsoft Arts, VH1, Adult Swim, Consequence of Sound, and more.

Her specialty as a photographer is capturing the energy and essence of high profile bands and artists in performance. Some of the artists she has photographed include Paul McCartney, Foo Fighters, Madonna, Soundgarden, Metallica, Aerosmith, Coldplay, KISS, Bruce Springsteen, The Cure, Jack White, Jane’s Addiction, and Patti Smith.

Dana’s photographs have been exhibited in New York and Miami, and she has been interviewed about her work in AD Today (Italy), Paisajeselectricos magazine (Spain), and others. She has also been commissioned for portraits of musicians and created album covers.

In addition to her photography work, Dana has worked on numerous music videos and also wrote, directed, and edited two feature-length films: Stolen and FlatMates (winner, National Board of Review Award, 2003). Her most recent music video is for the New York City band Man Made Sun (“Belief,” 2013).

She lives, works, and is inspired by her favorite place in the world, New York City.
